The Saga cinema is a fantastic place to visit. Locked up and abandoned for more than 25 years, the cinema, in the village of Adak, has now been reopened and today combines the exotic world of film with the fascinating story of industrial growth and decline - all in an inspiring rural setting.

The story behind the Saga cinema is fascinating. The first film showings were made possible by Östen Dahlberg, who worked at mine's processing plant. In 1945, he fulfilled a dream when he first opened the doors of his house and cinema to the public.
Originally the building was used for other events as well as a cinema but, by 1965, competition from other cinemas and the arrival of television forced Östen to close it and the family moved away from the village. Almost forgotten, it was more than 25 years before a local cinema support group was formed and gave the Saga a new lease of life. Today cinema-goers make a trip back in time to the 1940s. The walls are decorated with posters advertising films from that era and the screen is behind a gold-braided curtain in excellent condition.
But there is much more to do in Adak than visit this wonderful cinema. The Adak mine is the subject of an exhibition and the Eliva Museum houses a fantastic collection of minerals. There are also guided tours of Östen Dahlberg's house. During the third week in July, a popular film festival is held.
